 Asymmetry can be present as a localised dental arch problem without facial symmetry, or it can be related to an asymmetry of the face and jaws and will usually cause dental crossbite.  Sometimes a dental crossbite causes a significant displacement of the lower jaw and an apparent facial asymmetry (see example below).  Few people have facial asymmetry that is noticeable enough to warrant treatment for its own sake. Orthodontic mechanics to correct dental asymmetry must take into account the patient's treatment desires in relation to any facial asymmetry as correction of facial asymmetry usually requires jaw surgery.
