Self ligating braces (Self tying braces) like the Damon system (Damon Braces) and American Orthodontics Vision LP offer the possibility of shorter treatment times and less extractions for mild to moderately crowded crooked teeth. Self ligation braces are a recent development originally conceived by Dr Dwight Damon. His idea has been copied and redesigned by other companies and there is now a wide choice of these braces on the market, and there is still a lot of development and improvements occurring.  Some of the manufacturer's claims are still yet to be verified by independent scrutiny, but in Dr Daniels' 3 year experience, self ligating braces can certainly get the job done. However the additional complexity of the bracket manufacture can sometimes cause niggling problems so we are using (and comparing) two designs in North Sydney at the moment  shown below.

Self ligating brackets are not the most aesthetic braces design and if you are more concerned to minimise the appearance of your brace you may want to consider ICE ceramic brackets  or 'invisible braces instead.
